The primary purpose of the Outpatient Coder I position is to perform medical record review of clinic visits, radiology reports, laboratory requisitions, and/or other diagnostic testing/reports as assigned. The coder identifies the appropriate Evaluation and Management (E/M) visit charge for clinics only and assigns ICD-10 diagnosis code(s) and CPT procedure code(s) when appropriate to the encounter.
Responsibilities include reviewing outpatient medical records, analyzing clinical documentation for accurate coding and billing, determining and assigning appropriate E/M charges for clinic encounters, assigning correct ICD-10 diagnosis codes based on documented conditions, and applicable CPT procedure codes when supported by documentation.
Qualifications include a High School Diploma or equivalent, 1 to 2 years of medical records and outpatient coding experience (technical and hospital) or new graduates/senior students in Health Information Management (HIM), Health Information Technology (HIT), or related health fields considered in lieu of experience. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, Coding Clinic guidelines, outpatient ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding principles and guidelines, and experience using an encoder (Clintegrity 360) and electronic medical records is beneficial. Candidates must be detail-oriented, accurate, well-organized, able to work independently, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office. Availability to work evenings and/or weekends is required.

Hourly compensation range is $31.29 to $32.75 per hour according to New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final pay commensurate with experience and qualifications.
