Job Overview: A Medical Coding Specialist works to improve coding documentation and data quality in the HCC database. This position collaborates in providing expertise in the use and application of coding classifications such as ICD-10-CM.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assign and sequence ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes for various specialty patient types including Primary Care, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Oncology.
- Query physicians when documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding.
- Comply with HIPAA laws and regulations.
- Stay current on diagnosis coding guidelines and risk adjustment reimbursement reporting requirements.
- Assist RCM Leadership in developing policies, guidelines, and SOPs for primary care and specialty coding.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Perform related work and projects as required.
- Collaborate with manager to identify, develop, and implement strategies for quality improvement.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Active certified coder certification (CPC, CCS-P) through AHIMA or AAPC.
- At least two years of coding experience.
- Advanced knowledge of medical codes, terminology, abbreviations, anatomy & physiology, major diseases, pharmacology, and metric system.
- Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Excellent understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier coding and guidelines.
