Responsibilities include assisting in billing and coding quality audits, interpreting coding guidelines, reviewing medical records to ensure coding accuracy including ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes, assuring compliance with federal coding regulations, identifying documentation issues affecting coding accuracy, maintaining updated knowledge of AMA, CMS coding guidelines, and ensuring that EMR physician documentation meets coding requirements. The role involves collaboration with providers to meet documentation expectations and supports internal controls for compliance with CMS and OIG standards.
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in Health Information Management or related field preferred.
Active coding certification required, such as CPC or CPC-A (AAPC), or CCA, CCS, CCS-P (AHIMA).
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology.
Experience with EHR systems and encoder software.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
1 to 3 years of professional coding experience in outpatient, inpatient, or professional coding.
Experience coding for specialties like family medicine, emergency medicine, cardiology, orthopedics, or surgery.
Familiarity with risk adjustment/HCC coding as applicable.
Understanding of payer guidelines and claims processing workflows.
