This position requires high-level technical expertise in analyzing physician/provider documentation for Complex Outpatient (CO) and/or Inpatient records to determine diagnoses, procedures, and provide accurate coding including MS-DRG, POA, SOI, ROM assignments, and APCs.
Responsibilities include using encoder software and official coding guidelines from CMS, AHA, AMA, AHIMA, and organizational policies to assign ICD-CM, CPT, HCPCS codes, and related groupings and modifiers.
Key duties:
- Navigate health records and systems for coding accuracy
- Assign codes for complex inpatient and outpatient cases
- Collaborate with HIM and Patient Financial Services on billing and reimbursement issues
- Track missing documentation and facilitate timely coding
- Investigate claim denials and appeals
- Maintain current knowledge of coding and reimbursement regulations
- Uphold compliance, ethics, and professional standards
Qualifications:
- Completion of AHIMA/AAPC approved coding program or Associate's degree in Health Information Management or related field; Bachelor's preferred
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), CPC, RHIT, or RHIA
- Minimum 2 years of complex outpatient or inpatient coding experience; 3-5 years preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, coding systems, and grouping
- Experience with encoder/grouping software and computer proficiency
- Strong communication, organizational, critical thinking skills
- Ability to work independently and adapt in virtual/collaborative environments
Physical requirements include ability to work at a computer for extended periods, occasional lifting up to 20 lbs, and ability to travel to the hospital approximately 10% of the time.
