We are seeking a highly experienced Inpatient Medical Coder with a deep background in acute care hospital coding. This role focuses exclusively on inpatient coding (ICD-10-CM/PCS and DRG assignment) for high-acuity, complex hospital cases.
Candidates must reside in one of the following states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia.
Core responsibilities include performing full-scope inpatient coding for acute care hospital encounters using ICD-10-CM/PCS; assigning and sequencing principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures per UHDDS standards; ensuring accurate MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment; applying Present on Admission indicators; identifying Hospital-Acquired Conditions; reviewing complete inpatient medical records; analyzing complex cases such as ICU, trauma, surgical, and transplant; managing compliant provider queries; resolving pre-bill edits; abstracting and inputting clinical and coding data; collaborating with HIM and CDI teams to improve documentation and DRG accuracy; and maintaining high productivity and accuracy in a production-driven environment.
Required qualifications: minimum 5 years of dedicated inpatient coding experience in an acute care hospital setting; advanced expertise in ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, MS-DRG/APR-DRG assignment, UHDDS guidelines and inpatient regulations; proven experience coding complex inpatient cases; strong understanding of CMS guidelines; active certifications such as RHIA, RHIT, CCS or equivalent; demonstrated ability to meet inpatient coding productivity and accuracy benchmarks.
Preferred background includes experience in large acute care hospitals (500+ beds), teaching or university-affiliated hospitals, exposure to high-acuity multi-specialty inpatient populations, experience with coding platforms like Epic or 3M 360, and broad inpatient specialty experience (medical/surgical, cardiology, orthopedics, neurology, gastroenterology, behavioral health, transplant).

Proven ability to code complex cases, knowledge of CMS compliance, and the ability to meet strict productivity and accuracy standards are essential.
Preferred qualifications include experience in large or teaching hospitals, familiarity with coding software (Epic, 3M 360), and comprehensive specialty coding knowledge across multiple inpatient areas.
