Wellstar Health System is seeking an Inpatient Coder 3 to review inpatient and interventional radiology (IVR) medical records, accurately assign ICD-10-CM diagnostic and ICD-10-PCS/CPT-4 HCPCS procedural codes to the highest specificity, and determine the most accurate DRG/APC. The role includes abstracting demographic and coding information accurately and completely.
Key responsibilities include:
- Coding and abstracting medical records with at least 95% accuracy
- Accurate assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes following Official Guidelines and facility policies
- Accurate abstraction of patient demographic data into the EMR
- Assigning the correct DRG/APC
- Meeting productivity standards
- Querying providers to clarify codes when necessary
- Managing additional coding responsibilities, such as resolving coding edits, handling problem or high dollar accounts, and assisting with backlog
- Mentoring new coders and assisting with cleaning or escalating missing documentation
- Assisting with observation, same-day surgery, outpatient, and emergency coding when assigned
- Complying with all Wellstar Health System policies and codes of conduct
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED with completed anatomy and physiology courses required
- Minimum 3 years acute care inpatient and/or IVR coding experience
- Maintained 95% or higher accuracy in previous roles
- Ability to work remotely
- Computer and data entry skills plus proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
- Strong communication skills with healthcare team members
Preferred certifications include Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), and AAPC credentials.
