Medical Coder III

We are seeking experienced Medical Coder III specialists for Outpatient and Emergency Department (ED) coding to support the Defense Health Agency (DHA). This remote position is open to candidates residing in Puerto Rico or the continental United States.

Candidates will accurately assign CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and modifiers for outpatient encounters, same-day surgeries, and ER visits. Additional inpatient coding assignments may also be tasked.

Qualifications include completion of one of the following education paths:

  • Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or biological sciences.
  • University certificate in medical coding.
  • At least 30 semester hours of relevant coursework (anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, pharmacology).
  • Completion of an AAPC or AHIMA coding certification preparation course.
  • Advanced training for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, or equivalent military medical training.

Required certifications include at least one professional coding certification (e.g., CPC, RHIT, RHIA, CCS-P) plus either Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), RHIT, RHIA, or CCS, and a recognized Evaluation and Management coding certification (CEMC or CEMA).

Additional requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship (required for DHA contract eligibility).
  • Minimum 3 years experience preferred in Outpatient or Emergency Department coding.

Core duties involve accurate code assignment, documentation review, resolving coding discrepancies, collaborating with clinical teams, supporting coding compliance and education, ensuring DHA coding standards are met, and possibly supporting inpatient coding.

Preferred experience includes familiarity with MHS Genesis or Military Health System applications and prior DHA or federal healthcare contract coding.

This full-time remote position supports a mission-driven healthcare program serving the military community, emphasizing compliance and accuracy.

  • Fluent English skills (reading, writing, verbal communication).
  • Minimum three years outpatient or emergency department coding experience preferred.
  • Completion of required education or training in health information or medical coding.
  • Hold required professional coding certifications (CPC, RHIT, RHIA, CCS-P, COC, CEMC or CEMA).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a favorable Department of Defense background clearance.
  • Ability to research and interpret DHA/DoD coding guidelines ethically and accurately.
