The coding specialist utilizes coding skills and clinical knowledge to review medical records. Accurate ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes are assigned based on documentation in the medical record, directly impacting reimbursement. Queries clinicians when clarification is needed.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Assigning accurate ICD-CM diagnosis and CPT codes timely for all appropriate encounters using CMS and American Hospital Guidelines, CPT Assistant, and following AHIMA code of ethics (60%).
- Utilizing clinical knowledge to interact regularly with physicians/providers to improve documentation accuracy reflecting severity of illness and level of care (30%).
- Participating in continuing education to enhance coding knowledge (10%).
Additional duties:
- Meeting established productivity guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned.
Competency in Microsoft Windows is required.
Certifications and Licensures:
- Fingerprinting required.
- Must be RHIA or RHIT eligible; certification must be attained within six months of hire and maintained.
Education:
- Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology required.
Experience:
- Coding experience from an AHIMA approved internship or AHIMA independent study program.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy preferred.
Skills:
- Strong written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
Working conditions:
- Exposure to stressful situations including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
