Candidates must have a primary address located within the state of Michigan or be willing to move to Michigan to be considered.

The coding specialist utilizes coding skills and clinical knowledge to review medical records. Accurate ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes are assigned based on documentation in the medical record, directly impacting reimbursement. Queries clinicians when clarification is needed.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Assigning accurate ICD-CM diagnosis and CPT codes timely for all appropriate encounters using CMS and American Hospital Guidelines, CPT Assistant, and following AHIMA code of ethics (60%).
  • Utilizing clinical knowledge to interact regularly with physicians/providers to improve documentation accuracy reflecting severity of illness and level of care (30%).
  • Participating in continuing education to enhance coding knowledge (10%).

Additional duties:

  • Meeting established productivity guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competency in Microsoft Windows is required.

Certifications and Licensures:

  • Fingerprinting required.
  • Must be RHIA or RHIT eligible; certification must be attained within six months of hire and maintained.

Education:

  • Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology required.

Experience:

  • Coding experience from an AHIMA approved internship or AHIMA independent study program.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.

Working conditions:

  • Exposure to stressful situations including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Use of personal protective equipment including latex materials.
  • Ability to move about the facility and perform job functions with or without assistive devices.
  • Vision and hearing adequate to perform duties.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking; occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens; compliance with health and safety protocols required.
  • Ability to multitask, work independently, and maintain regular attendance.
  • Sedentary physical demand level - occasional lifting or carrying of 0-10 lbs.
Requirements & Qualifications

Candidates must have a primary address in Michigan or willingness to relocate. Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology required. Coding experience from AHIMA approved internship or program. RHIA or RHIT certification eligibility required; certification mandatory within six months of hire. Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy preferred. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to handle stressful situations and comply with health safety protocols. Competency in Microsoft Windows needed.
