Coder - Outpatient

This job performs thorough medical record review to abstract medical and demographic data, interpret and apply diagnoses and procedures utilizing ICD and CPT coding systems and assists in decreasing the average accounts receivable days.

Responsibilities include reviewing and interpreting medical information, physician treatment plans, course, and outcome to determine appropriate ICD-10 CM/CPT codes for diagnoses and procedures (65% of the time). Abstracting data elements to satisfy statistical requests by the hospital, health system, medical staff, etc., and entering all coded/abstracted information into designated systems (15%). Ensuring efficient management of medical information and cash flow related to unbilled coding reports (10%). Staying informed of updates in ICD-10 CM/CPT guidelines through training and coding clinics and implementing these updates in daily work (5%). Performing other duties as assigned (5%).

Minimum qualifications include High School/GED, successful completion of coding courses in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, 1 year of hospital and/or physician coding, 1 year coding at mid-level facilities or clinics, 1 year coding major surgeries, observations, and/or E/Ms, medical terminology proficiency, strong data entry skills, understanding of computer applications, ability to work with healthcare team members, and any of the following credentials: RHIT, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, or COC.

Preferred qualifications include an Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or related field.

This role requires compliance with HIPAA and company policies regarding confidentiality and ethical behavior.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 1 year coding at mid-level facilities or clinics
  • 1 year coding major surgeries, observations, and/or E/Ms
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Strong data entry skills
  • Understanding of computer applications
  • Ability to collaborate with healthcare team members
  • One of the following certifications: RHIT, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, COC

Preferred:

  • Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or related field
