The Medical Coder ensures compliance with legal coding procedures and practices. Responsibilities include conducting audits and coding reviews to ensure accurate documentation, assigning and sequencing codes for services rendered, and collaborating with the business office to ensure timely billing.
Key duties:
- Use specialized medical classification software to assign procedure and diagnosis codes for insurance billing.
- Review claims data to ensure compliance with legal and insurance rules, including required signatures and authorizations before submission.
- Conduct medical records research and correspond with insurance companies and healthcare professionals to resolve denied claim issues.
- Adhere to coding policies consistent with industry standard guidelines for CPT, ICD-9, and ICD-10 coding.
Westborough Behavioral Healthcare Hospital provides psychiatric stabilization and diagnostic treatments for children, special needs, and adult patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The hospital operates 24/7 with multiple shifts available.
Requirements:
- High School diploma required.
- Associate's Degree or Certificate in Medical Coding/CPC required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 coding, anatomy and physiology, medical law, privacy, and ethics.
- Familiarity with CMS rules and regulations, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding Systems (HCPCS), CPT coding, and healthcare reimbursement methods.
- Minimum 1 year coding experience, preferably in psychiatric services.
- At least 2-3 years working experience in a medical office.
