Under the general direction of the Director CDI/Coding or designee, the Outpatient Medical Coder will improve documentation, data quality, and revenue cycle operations. This role focuses on outpatient ambulatory and observation status coding, as well as infusions and injection coding.
Core responsibilities include:
- Assigning diagnosis and procedure codes for accurate and timely billing to the appropriate payer.
- Auditing charges and establishing proper coding in collaboration with providers.
- Initiating and following up on queries with providers.
- Assisting departments with diagnostic and procedural coding.
- Responding to insurance, compliance, and RAC denials.
- Reviewing and assisting in maintaining coding-related policies and procedures.
- Performing other duties as required.
Requirements & Qualifications
Required:
- AS in Health Information Management, related degree, or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of EMR, coding software, and Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of modifiers, medical necessity, and CCI edits.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in ambulatory and observation status coding.
- Experience with infusion and injections coding.
Preferred:
- BS in Health Information Management.
- Knowledge of Epic and 3M software.
Preferred Certifications:
- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CIC certification.
