University Health Network is recruiting a full-time Certified Medical Coder focused on risk adjustment within the clinically integrated network linked to The University of Tennessee Medical Center and University Physicians’ Association. This remote position requires normal business hours Monday-Friday with occasional on-site meetings. Candidates must be located in the Knoxville, TN area and comply with HIPAA privacy when working remotely.
Key responsibilities include detailed clinical documentation and risk adjustment reviews, accurate coding of procedures and diagnoses using ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers for professional services. Duties involve meeting daily productivity and quality goals, reviewing clinical documentation for accuracy and compliance, collaborating with healthcare providers for coding clarification, utilizing CMS and HHS risk adjustment tools, participating in ongoing education and team meetings.
The coder partners with providers and practice staff to enhance coding quality and efficiency, coaches on compliant coding and documentation, facilitates a culture of compliance and integrity, and maintains HIPAA privacy guidelines.
The role requires staying current with AMA ICD-10 coding guidelines, Medicare and commercial plan regulations, CMS and HHS HCC risk adjustment models, and meeting CEU requirements, maintaining good standing with AAPC/AHIMA certifications.

Current CPC or RHIT certification is required; CRC certification to be obtained within 6 months of hire. Preferably at least two years of professional medical coding experience in ambulatory care, with E/M coding experience as a plus. Knowledge and experience with HCC coding, chronic illness diagnosis, treatment, and management preferred. Candidates must be team players with strong written and verbal communication, relationship-building, and interpersonal skills. Must demonstrate initiative, organization, excellent time management, good problem-solving, critical thinking skills, sharp attention to detail, and proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Candidates must adhere to high standards of personal and professional integrity.
