Qualifications include an Associate’s degree or higher from a CAHIIM accredited program or equivalent additional experience, one year of relevant inpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist coding programs, and certification such as RHIT, RHIA, or CCS by AHIMA.

Key skills involve proficiency in coding classification systems, DRG/APC systems, official coding guidelines, knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, electronic medical records, and coding software.

Responsibilities include effective communication within coding teams, responding promptly to coding requests, querying physicians for documentation clarification, assigning accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS codes, maintaining data quality and coding standards, supporting accounts receivables goals, and continuous performance improvement.
