At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder position is responsible for ensuring diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to inpatient encounters based on documentation within the electronic medical record, while maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.
The role requires adherence to coding standards including ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS codes and compliance with hospital policies and regulatory guidelines. Responsibilities include reviewing medical record documentation, abstracting data into electronic systems such as EPIC/EHR, initiating physician queries when needed, and maintaining high coding accuracy and productivity.
Qualifications include an Associate's degree or higher in a CAHIIM accredited program or equivalent experience, one year of inpatient coding experience or completion of related coding programs, and certification (RHIT, RHIA, or CCS) from AHIMA.
The position demands strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, coding classification systems (DRG, APC), proficiency with electronic encoders and office software, and effective communication skills. The role supports departmental goals related to accounts receivable and timely processing of coding assignments.
The job is full-time and located in Georgia, with some travel possibly required in and outside the Houston Metropolitan area. On-call duty is not required.
