Maple City Health Care Center (MCHCC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center dedicated to improving community health by providing comprehensive healthcare accessible to all.
The Medical Coder is responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes for medical, dental, and behavioral health services, complying with federal, state, payer, and HRSA/FQHC requirements. This supports timely billing, reimbursement optimization, and audit readiness.
Responsibilities include:
- Reviewing provider documentation for accuracy and completeness
- Assigning appropriate codes for primary care, behavioral health, and dental services
- Ensuring coding supports medical necessity and payer requirements
- Applying correct modifiers, place of service codes, and diagnosis sequencing
- Identifying documentation gaps and communicating with providers
- Maintaining compliance with CMS, Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payer rules, HRSA and FQHC billing requirements
- Preventing fraud, waste, and abuse
- Assisting with claim edits, denials, and coding appeals
- Participating in coding audits and corrective actions
- Staying current with coding updates and regulations
- Supporting productivity and quality benchmarks
- Maintaining HIPAA confidentiality and compliance
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent (associate degree preferred)
- Minimum 1 year medical coding experience, preferably in primary care or multi-specialty environments
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II
- Experience with EMR systems
- Understanding Medicare and Medicaid billing rules
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other EMR software
- Self-motivated with critical thinking and multitasking skills
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required
- Effective interpersonal skills
Preferred Certifications:
- CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
- CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
- CCS-P (Physician-based)
