Medical Coder

The Medical Coder provides expert coding support within the Health Information Management (HIM) department. This role is responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes utilizing encoding software and online reference tools. All coding is performed in strict accordance with American Medical Association (AMA) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines and regulations to ensure compliance and optimal reimbursement.

This position is full time (40 hours per week) with a day shift from 8am to 4:30pm and is fully remote.

Duties include:

• Reviewing medical records to determine appropriate facility and/or provider-based diagnosis and procedure codes, covering ambulatory clinic, outpatient, observation, emergency department charging, and emergency-to-inpatient charging.
• Analyzing, researching, and correcting moderately complex data integrity issues.
• Abstracting and collecting pertinent patient information housed in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Contributing to coding compliance and departmental objectives through skill development and adherence to professional coding standards.
• Efficient use of online coding software for accuracy, including analyzing coding edits, applying modifiers, and using coding reference tools.
• Maintaining accuracy for coding and productivity standards while adhering to ethical guidelines.
• Seeking documentation clarification from healthcare providers or designated resources to ensure accurate and complete coding, including billing accuracy for facility and/or professional services.
