Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago is the largest pediatric provider in the region with a 140-year legacy and ranked across 10 specialties by U.S. News & World Report.

This role is responsible for the timely and accurate coding and abstracting of inpatient visits, following ICD-10 code sets and coding guidelines to meet revenue cycle and quality goals. Key functions include thorough review of inpatient documentation, validating MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignments, weekly coding of interim bill requests, reviewing notes from Clinical Documentation Specialists, coordinating with Case Management, identifying documentation issues for coding accuracy, and facilitating Hospital Acquired Conditions reporting. The position also involves research on complex coding cases, recommending system edits to prevent errors, maintaining compliance with AHA, AMA, CMS, OIG, and TJC standards, ongoing education in coding changes, training new employees, and assisting with system changes.

Candidates must hold at minimum a CCS, RHIA, or RHIT credential and maintain continuing education requirements. Completion of an AHIMA approved program and passing the Lurie Children's Coding Exam (minimum 90%) is required. The role requires at least one year prior hospital coding experience, preferably with inpatient APR DRG, proficiency in Microsoft Office and EMR navigation, minimum typing speed of 30 WPM, and strong communication skills.

Education requirement: Associate's Degree in Health Administration.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Must possess and maintain CCS, RHIA, or RHIT credential.
  • Completion of Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Sciences, Pharmacology, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and Healthcare Data Content Structures courses.
  • Completion of an AHIMA approved RHIT, RHIA, or CCS program.
  • Must pass Lurie Children's Coding Exam with at least 90% score.
  • Minimum 1 year prior hospital coding experience required; inpatient APR DRG experience preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and EMR systems.
  • Minimum typing speed of 30 WPM.
  • Strong effective communication skills with clinical, clerical, management staff and external contacts.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work under deadline pressure.
  • Associate's degree in Health Administration required.
