Coder II, Medical Records

SGMC Health is committed to providing excellent care and fostering a positive work environment focused on teamwork, accountability, and compassion. This position is located at the Main Campus with a full-time 8-hour day shift schedule, Monday to Friday 8am-5pm.

The Coder II analyzes inpatient and outpatient medical records to assign ICD-10 and CPT codes for diagnoses and procedures, primarily coding all inpatient visits and as needed outpatient visits, including emergency, outpatient surgery, observation, and various clinics. The role uses 3M encoder and grouper, verifies codes in books, maintains a productivity log daily, and interacts with physicians and other health professionals to confirm documentation. A minimum of 98% accuracy and 95% productivity rate is maintained.

Knowledge and skills required include an associate degree from a certified health information technology program (RHIT certification preferred), Certified Coding Specialist preferred but not required, knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding, and at least one year inpatient coding experience preferred. Flexibility in scheduling, analytical skills, typing skills, and professional communication skills are essential.

The position involves long hours at a computer terminal, requiring good vision, ability to handle high stress to meet turnaround times while maintaining accuracy, and ability to use multiple systems simultaneously such as 3M Encoder, Series and HPF record imaging systems.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate Degree from a certified health information technology program preferred, RHIT certification preferred
  • Certified Coding Specialist preferred but not required

  • Minimum one year inpatient coding experience preferred; outpatient coding experience considered
