Inpatient Coder

University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC)

The Inpatient Coder will be responsible for expert inpatient coding of medical records to index clinical information used for research, utilization, appropriateness of care, compilation of statistics for hospital, regional, and government use, and accurate reimbursement. The role includes identifying and reporting coding opportunities, recommending improvements, monitoring trends, and escalating discrepancies to management.

Experience Required:

  • Equivalent to high school graduation plus three years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care setting. Formal education in a related field may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licensing/Certification:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)

Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems, Medicare hospital and IPPS coding and reimbursement regulations, MS-DRG classification structure, healthcare technology, electronic health record (EHR) practices, coding guidelines, revenue cycle workflows, and departmental policies and procedures.

Skills include coding with quality and productivity standards, data collection and retrieval, document review for accuracy, computer assisted coding systems such as 3M 360, running queries, reviewing denials, preparing technical reports, and maintaining confidentiality of patient information.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in office settings using standard equipment, sitting for extended periods, visual acuity to read printed and screen materials, and effective communication abilities.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years inpatient coding experience in acute care setting or equivalent education
  • Certification required: CCS, RHIA, or RHIT
  • Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS, Medicare regulations, MS-DRG
  • Proficiency with coding guidelines, EHR, revenue cycle workflows, departmental policies
  • Skilled in computer-assisted coding systems such as 3M 360
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and confidentiality
  • Capable of working extended periods with concentration
