Coder Abstractor - General Surgery

Work remotely as a Coder Abstractor responsible for the charge capture process of professional charges within the Munson system. Duties include verifying and analyzing medical records and encounter forms to determine principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures; assigning ICD9/10CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes and modifiers using CMS and Munson guidelines; performing data entry; and resolving discrepancies.

Serve as a liaison between Central Billing Office and departments, assist with orientation and training of new coding staff, review electronic charges for accuracy (targeting 95% accuracy), interpret physician documentation related to surgical procedures, and ensure charges are coded and entered within two business days. Identify educational needs and compliance issues and report them appropriately. Act as an expert resource for physicians and staff on coding and compliance questions.

Qualifications require an Associate’s degree in Health Record Technology or related field and two years of professional coding experience plus obtaining CPC, RHIT, or RHIA credentials within 18 months of hire; or three years of professional coding experience with credentials; or four to five years of professional coding experience with credentials obtained within 18 months of hire. Must have at least two years of general surgery coding experience.

Munson Healthcare requires vaccination or confirmed immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and annual flu vaccination or approved exemptions.
