At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder position is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to inpatient encounters based on electronic medical record documentation while ensuring compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.
Qualifications include an Associate's degree or higher from a CAHIIM accredited program or equivalent experience. Requires one year of relevant inpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice or Transition Programs.
Must hold one of the following certifications: RHIT (Certified Health Information Technician), RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), or CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA.
Key skills include proficiency in medical coding classification (ICD-10-CM/PCS), DRG/APC systems, official coding guidelines, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Experience with electronic medical records (EPIC preferred) and electronic encoders is preferred.
The role involves interacting effectively with coding teams and stakeholders, responding promptly to coding requests, initiating physician queries, maintaining coding quality and compliance with AHIMA ethical standards, and supporting organizational productivity goals.
Additional responsibilities include performance evaluation, quality improvement, and adherence to departmental coding timelines. Business professional attire is required, with no on-call duties. Travel within and outside Houston metropolitan area may be required.
