Senior Medical Records Coder

Are you an experienced inpatient coder who thrives in fast-paced, academic environments and wants to make a lasting impact beyond the chart? This Senior Medical Records Coder role sits at the heart of two dynamic Family Medicine Residency programs—Corewell Health Troy Beaumont and CHMG East–Grosse Pointe—supporting highly productive faculty physicians, community preceptors, and more than 24 residents and medical students. In this highly visible and influential position, you’ll serve as both coding expert and educator, guiding providers through complex documentation, billing, and compliance requirements while helping shape the next generation of primary care physicians through audits, one-on-one education, resident orientation, and ongoing regulatory review.

Under general supervision and according to established procedures, provides technical support to the Inpatient Coding Staff and coordinates daily workflow based on the needs of the department. On a daily basis, provides the Coding Manager with departmental statistics such as the monitoring/tracking of inpatient coder productivity and uncoded figures. Works with the Coding Manager and Coding Educator to identify and resolve coding issues. Serves as the primary contact for outside departments for inpatient coding related questions. Reports to the Director of Medical Records and the Coding Manager a list of aged accounts. Follows up with the Medical Records Staff and/or Physician as necessary to obtain required documentation to code all accounts in a timely manner. Provides coding support as directed by the Coding Manager.

Essential functions include providing technical coding support to inpatient coding staff, coordinating workflow, submitting departmental productivity statistics daily, resolving coding issues, reporting aged accounts, analyzing patient medical records and assigning ICD 9 CM and HCPCS diagnostic and operative procedure codes, applying hospital discharge data set definitions and sequencing guidelines, assessing adequacy of medical record documentation, consulting with physicians for clarification, answering coding and DRG questions, assisting finance and data processing departments, pursuing ongoing professional development, attending required safety training, following hospital exposure control plans, promoting a respectful work environment, and participating in quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in Medical Information Technology with coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, ICD 9 CM coding, and prospective payment.
  • Minimum 2 years of coding experience in an acute care setting.

Preferred certifications include Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified-Physician Based Coding Specialist (CCS-P), and Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from AHIMA.
