Certified Medical Records Coder - Outpatient (Swing/Weekend)

The County of Riverside - Riverside University Health System Medical Records Department is hiring multiple Certified Medical Records Coders for outpatient coding. Responsibilities include advanced coding and abstracting of outpatient medical records using the latest ICD-CM and CPT coding systems, entering data into the computer system, and querying physicians as needed. The role emphasizes outpatient coding guidelines, Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) System, and CPT code assignment, differing from inpatient coding which involves complex codes and DRG assignment. Candidates with acute hospital experience are encouraged to apply. The position involves working swing shifts, weekends, and some holidays, with a 5-day, 40-hour week schedule and rotating holidays. New hires must work in-office for 10 weeks, with potential for a hybrid schedule thereafter based on performance. Minimum qualifications require one year of medical record coding experience in acute care using ICD-CM and CPT, outpatient, or Emergency Room coding within the last two years. Required certification includes CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, CPC, or CPC-H. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease study, and coding classification systems is essential. The candidate must have the ability to code medical records, abstract information, follow instructions, use relevant software, communicate effectively with healthcare and administrative staff, and maintain professional relationships.

The position is within Riverside University Health System which operates 13 Community Health Centers providing primary and specialty care services to vulnerable populations.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Minimum one year of medical record coding experience in an acute care setting, outpatient, or Emergency Room coding within the last two years.
  • Current valid certification as CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, CPC, or CPC-H.
  • Knowledge of ICD-CM and CPT classification coding systems, anatomy, physiology, and disease study.
  • Proficiency in standard clerical office procedures and Windows-based software.
  • Ability to code medical records accurately, abstract pertinent data, follow written and oral instructions.
  • Effective communication with medical and administrative personnel.
  • Must be able to work swing shifts, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Willingness to work in-office for initial 10 weeks, with potential for hybrid work later.
  • Compliance with pre-employment physical exam, drug/alcohol test, criminal background investigation, and fingerprinting.
  • Upload transcripts, licenses, and/or certificates as part of application.
