HIM Inpatient Coder 1 is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation in inpatient health records to accurately assign and sequence ICD-9 and ICD-10 diagnostic and procedure codes for reimbursement and data collection.
They ensure all accounts are coded correctly and within 4 days of patient discharge following AHIMA guidelines. They verify patient information for discrepancies, act as quality reviewers, and use appropriate modifiers when coding. Queries physicians for clarification when needed according to official coding guidelines and clinics. They ensure coding reflects care rendered for patient safety, accurate data, and organizational reimbursement.
The coder reports unusual circumstances to administrators and maintains continuing education to keep certifications. They follow HIPAA and other regulations, demonstrate CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Expertise), and perform related duties as assigned.
Experience generally required is 0 to 3 years. A high school diploma is required. Must have ability to analyze, organize and communicate effectively, handle stressful situations with sound judgment, and use job appropriate technology.
Employees hired after June 2015 must have HIM/Coding credentials certified by AHIMA or AAPC.
The job is sedentary requiring sitting for long periods with occasional standing or walking. It involves exposure to fast-paced, stressful environments including possible exposure to communicable diseases and use of PPE when needed. Reasonable accommodations are provided as necessary.
