The Inpatient/Outpatient Medical Coder is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedural codes for inpatient and outpatient encounters in accordance with ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT guidelines. This role ensures timely, compliant coding that supports accurate reimbursement, regulatory reporting, and organizational quality standards. The Medical Coder works collaboratively with clinical teams, CDI specialists, and revenue cycle partners to resolve documentation issues, prevent denials, and maintain coding quality and productivity benchmarks.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years coding experience in acute care setting highly preferred.
- Knowledge of ICD-10 CM/PCS and CPT coding guidelines.
- Knowledge of DRGs, MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, APCs, MUE Edits, LCD/NCD Edits, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and disease processes.
- BA, BS or AA in Health Information Management or coding certification required.
- ICD-10 training appropriate to credential required.
- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P certification required; other certifications may be reviewed. Education or certification eligible may be considered.
