SDS/Observations Medical Coder

Optum is a global organization delivering care supported by technology to help millions live healthier lives. The SDS/Observations Medical Coder role is full-time (40 hours/week), Monday to Friday, with flexibility to telecommute anywhere in the U.S.

Primary responsibilities include assigning CPT and ICD-10 codes for outpatient Ambulatory Observation services, applying coding knowledge to analyze and correct CCI and Medical Necessity Edits, understanding Medicare Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) codes, abstracting additional data during chart review, adhering to AAPC/AHIMA coding ethical standards, maintaining coding quality and productivity, querying physicians as necessary, keeping up-to-date with coding knowledge, participating in meetings and educational events, and record maintenance.

Required qualifications include a High School Diploma/GED or higher, current coding credentials from AHIMA or AAPC (such as RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H), at least 2 years of outpatient facility coding experience including Same Day Surgery Coding and ICD-10 proficiency, and intermediate proficiency with Windows, MS Excel, and EMR systems.

Telecommuting requires a dedicated private workspace, ability to secure sensitive documents, and reliable high-speed internet per UnitedHealth Group policy.

Compensation includes an hourly range of $20.00 to $35.72 based on full-time employment (approx. $41,600 to $74,317 annually), a $3,000 sign-on bonus for external candidates, and a comprehensive benefits package including incentives, stock purchase, and 401k contributions.

  • 2+ years outpatient facility coding experience
  • 2+ years experience with Same Day Surgery Coding
  • 2+ years ICD-10 coding experience
  • Intermediate proficiency with Windows, MS Excel, and EMR systems
  • Ability to maintain privacy and security in telecommuting environment
  • Must comply with UnitedHealth Group's Telecommuter Policy
