Medical Records Coder II - Inpatient

Patient Revenue Management Organization (PRMO) at Duke Health is a centralized revenue cycle organization supporting multiple Duke health facilities. The Mission focuses on quality service by enhancing patient experience, financial security, and advancing health.

This position is 100% remote, open to residents of NC, VA, SC, TN, FL, and TX.

Sign-on bonus: $10,000 paid in 4 equal installments over 24 months.

The Medical Records Coder II (Inpatient) is a certified coder responsible for coordinating and reviewing subordinate work, assisting with training, and coding medical records using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT-4 conventions. The role involves reviewing complex medical records for accurate coding of diagnoses and procedures to ensure appropriate reimbursement for hospital and professional charges.

Duties include:

  • Reviewing complex coding cases requiring research
  • Coordinating and auditing designated employees' work
  • Assisting with continuing education program development and presentation
  • Coding diagnoses and procedures following guidelines for DRG/APC assignment
  • Consulting and educating physicians and collaborating with nursing and ancillary services for coding accuracy
  • Maintaining knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, disease processes, surgical techniques, and relevant coding guidelines via continuing education
  • Staying informed on medical record standards and regulations (JCAHO, HCFA, MRNC)
  • Assisting with special projects
  • Performing related duties as required
Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma required
  • Certification required: must hold one active certification among RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, or HCS-D
  • Experience requirements vary by certification:
    • RHIA and RHIT: no experience required
    • CCS: one year coding experience
    • CPC or HCS-D: two years coding experience
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4 coding conventions
  • Ability to review complex medical records ensuring specificity and accuracy
  • Skills in coordinating and reviewing others' coding work
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical techniques
  • Understanding of medical record standards and healthcare regulations
  • Effective communication skills for educating physicians and collaborating with clinical staff
