The Hospital Coder applies skills and knowledge of currently mandated Inpatient coding and classification systems and official resources to select appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes (PCS), and other codes representing healthcare services (including substances, equipment, supplies, or other items used in healthcare). They ensure optimal reimbursement legally entitled to the facility by selecting and sequencing codes accurately, following ethical and legal guidelines. This role is fully remote.
Key responsibilities include using computerized encoding systems for accurate coding, sequencing diagnoses and procedures according to ICD-10-CM/PCS, Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS), Medicare, Medicaid, and fiscal intermediary guidelines. Supports reporting of healthcare data elements required for external purposes such as reimbursement and quality measurement, in compliance with regulatory standards and coding conventions. Queries providers for clarification on ambiguous or incomplete health record information. Maintains integrity and ethical coding practices, attends coding meetings, participates in LEAN problem-solving activities, and assists with organizing department shared drives. Other duties as assigned by manager.
High School Diploma or G.E.D. (required). Prior hospital medical coding experience preferred. Experience with 3M 360 and EPIC systems preferred. Must achieve 80% or higher on assessment; new coders with higher scores considered. Excellent computer skills, ability to navigate multiple systems, troubleshooting skills, and ability to work independently in a remote setting maintaining confidentiality of health information. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS or CPT-4 Coding classification systems. Detail-oriented and efficient. Coding certification/credential through AHIMA or AAPC and current good standing required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
