Medical Records Coder II - Inpatient

Patient Revenue Management Organization (PRMO) is a centralized revenue cycle organization supporting Duke Health, focusing on scheduling, registration, coding, HIM operations, billing, collections, cash management, and customer service. This position is remote for residents of NC, VA, SC, TN, FL, and TX.

The Medical Records Coder II (Inpatient) is a certified coder responsible for coordinating and reviewing subordinate employees' work and assisting with training and education. Responsibilities include coding medical records using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT-4 conventions, ensuring specificity and optimal reimbursement, reviewing complex medical records, conducting audits, assisting in education program development, consulting with physicians on coding practices, and maintaining knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, regulations, and standards. Additional duties include participation in special projects and other related tasks.

Education required is a high school diploma. Certification required is one of the following: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, or HCS-D, with varying experience requirements (0-2 years depending on certification).

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma required.
  • Must hold one of the following active certifications: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Homecare Coding Specialist-Diagnosis (HCS-D).
  • RHIA or RHIT: no experience required.
  • CCS: one year coding experience.
  • CPC or HCS-D: two years coding experience.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4 coding conventions.
  • Ability to review complex medical records and ensure specificity and accuracy.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, surgical techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical record practices, JCAHO, HCFA, and other regulations.
  • Ability to coordinate and review employee work and assist in training.
