Job Summary: The IP Coder 3 position reports directly to the Supervisor of Coding. Key responsibilities include reviewing documentation in inpatient and/or IVR (interventional radiology) medical records and accurately assigning appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnostic, ICD-10-PCS/CPT-4 HCPCS procedural codes, and the most accurate DRG/APC when appropriate. Abstract patient demographic and coding information accurately.
Core Responsibilities:
- Accurately assign ICD-10 and CPT codes to the greatest specificity
- Abstract all required patient demographic data into the EMR
- Meet productivity standards
- Query providers if further clarification is needed
- Manage additional coding responsibilities contributing to candidate for bill (CFB) goals
- Resolve coding edits and reminders promptly (1-2 business days)
- Complete and route problem or high dollar accounts daily
- Assist with coding unassigned or backlogged accounts
- Mentor new coders
- Assist with missing documentation or work queues
- Assist with observation, same day surgery, outpatient, and emergency coding as needed
Other duties as assigned. Comply with Wellstar Health System policies and code of conduct.
Required Education:
- High School Diploma, GED, or Certificate in Anatomy
Required Certifications (upon hire, preferred):
- CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) or
- RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or
- RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of acute care inpatient and/or IVR coding experience
Skills:
- Demonstrated high accuracy in coding and DRG assignment meeting productivity goals
- Ability to work remotely
- Computer/data entry skills
- Strong communication skills with healthcare team
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
