The Hospital Coder applies skills and knowledge of mandated coding and classification systems to select the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes, including modifiers and other codes representing healthcare services such as substances, equipment, and supplies. The coder ensures proper sequencing of codes to optimize legal reimbursement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Using computerized encoding systems for accurate coding following ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT4, UHDDS, Medicare, Medicaid, and other guidelines.
- Supporting external reporting of healthcare data elements such as diagnoses, hospital acquired conditions, patient safety indicators for reimbursement and quality measurement.
- Querying physicians or qualified healthcare practitioners for clarification/additional documentation when health records are incomplete or ambiguous.
- Demonstrating ethical coding practices and maintaining integrity.
- Advancing coding knowledge through continuing education.
- Complying with coding policies and attending coding meetings and LEAN activities.
- Maintaining focus and using video cameras during remote meetings.
- Assisting with organization of the medical coding department shared drive.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Prior hospital medical coding experience preferred.
- Experience with 3M 360 and EPIC systems preferred.
- Coding certification through AHIMA or AAPC required and must be in good standing.
- Must achieve an assessment score of 80% or higher; new coders with higher scores considered.
- Excellent computer skills, multitasking, troubleshooting, and remote work capabilities with confidentiality.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, or CPT-4 coding systems.
- Detail-oriented and efficient while maintaining productivity.
