Clinical Coder III

The Clinical Coder III role entails thorough review of patient medical records to accurately code diagnoses and procedures impacting patient care. This includes verifying electronic medical record documentation supports coding, assisting in auditing for coding quality and reimbursement accuracy, and reporting to the Coding Program Manager. The coder also acts as a backup for coding, billing, abstracting, and auditing of outpatient and emergency department records. This specialist must stay current on ICD and CPT coding changes and payer-specific regulations.

Key responsibilities include coding complex inpatient records, demonstrating proficiency and compliance with regulatory requirements, identifying principal diagnosis and appropriate MS-DRG, completing records coding with ICD-10-PCS for secondary diagnoses and inpatient procedures, and writing compliant coding queries.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Degree in Health Information Management (HIM). RHIA or RHIT preferred; CCS certification required.
  • Minimum 4 years hospital coding experience, with at least 2 years inpatient coding.
  • Preferred experience in DRG validation or chart auditing.
  • Thorough understanding and experience with ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding systems.
  • Minimum 90% score on competency assessments and consistently exceeding Level II standards.
  • Knowledge of DNV, Joint Commission, and other regulatory agency chart documentation requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong analytical skills and decision-making ability with awareness of reimbursement and audit impacts.
  • Self-motivated, able to work unsupervised, with strong understanding of prospective payment systems and coding guidelines.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and accuracy standards under pressure.
  • Proficient in use of computerized encoder and Windows environment.
