Inpatient Coder

Houston Methodist

At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder is responsible for ensuring diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to inpatient encounters based on documentation within the electronic medical record, maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.

Requirements include an Associate's degree or higher in a CAHIIM accredited program or additional two years of experience in lieu of degree, with at least one year of relevant inpatient coding experience or completion of a related coding apprenticeship or transition program.

Required certifications: RHIT (Certified Health Information Technician), RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), or CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA.

Skills needed:

  • Proficiency in medical coding classification systems, DRG, APC systems, official coding guidelines, and coding compliance.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical record and imaging systems (preferred).
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and team members.
  • Strong PC and software proficiency related to coding.

Essential functions include accurate coding and abstracting using ICD-10-CM/PCS codes, quality maintenance, querying physicians for clarifications, meeting productivity standards, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

This position requires business professional attire and may involve travel within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area.
