Inpatient Coder

At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder position is responsible for ensuring that diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to inpatient encounters based upon documentation within the electronic medical record while maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.

The role requires interacting effectively with the coding team and stakeholders, providing feedback during meetings and education sessions, and taking initiative to share knowledge.

Duties include responding promptly to coding requests, initiating physician queries for clarification, maintaining high standards of coding quality using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes with electronic encoder applications, and abstracting accurate data into EPIC/Electronic Health Record systems.

The coder complies with ethical standards as set forth by AHIMA and adheres to official guidelines.

The position requires coding productivity standards to be met while ensuring accuracy, supporting organizational goals related to accounts receivables, and processing assigned work timely.

Candidates must demonstrate competency through ongoing performance evaluations, have proficiency in English, knowledge of coding classification systems, medical terminology, and computer skills including common office software and coding software.

The position does not require wearing uniforms or scrubs and is not on-call but may involve travel within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or higher in a CAHIIM accredited program or additional two years of experience in lieu of degree
  • One year of relevant inpatient coding experience or successful completion of Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program or Outpatient to Inpatient Coder Transition Program
  • Required certification: RHIT (Certified Health Information Technician), RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), or CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA
  • Skills to perform job safely and competently, demonstrated through assessments and evaluations
  • Proficiency in English for effective communication
  • Knowledge of coding classification systems, DRG and APC systems, official coding guidelines, and compliance
  • Preferred knowledge of electronic medical records and imaging systems
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Proficiency with electronic encoder applications preferred
  • Extensive PC knowledge to work efficiently with office software and coding systems
