SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, a leading metropolitan academic medical center in Brooklyn, is seeking a full-time Outpatient Coder / TH Medical Records Specialist to join the Department of Health Information Management. The role involves abstracting clinical information, assigning ICD-10 CM, ICD-10 PCS, or CPT codes in compliance with coding standards, ensuring confidentiality of patient data, querying physicians for documentation, and collaborating with hospital staff. The candidate will report to the Coding Manager and Director of the HIM Department.
Required qualifications include RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC coding certification, ability to make coding decisions based on established guidelines, and the capacity to work independently. Preferred qualifications include a BS degree in Health Information Management and 3-5 years of direct coding experience in an acute care setting.
The work schedule is Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- RHIA or RHIT or CCS or CPC coding certification.

- Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Information Management.
- 3-5 years of direct outpatient coding experience in an acute care setting.
