Outpatient Coder II

The Outpatient Coder II is responsible for accurately coding and abstracting outpatient medical records for reimbursement and statistical purposes, applying established coding guidelines. This includes reviewing coding and correcting edits to ensure compliance with regulations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Timely and accurate coding of outpatient medical records according to department policy
  • Translating verbal descriptions of diseases, injuries, and procedures into numerical ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes
  • Initiating physician or department queries for incomplete or ambiguous documentation
  • Accurately entering coding information into computer systems
  • Reconciling charges and resolving discrepancies based on patient schedules and billing slips
  • Maintaining a minimum accuracy rate of 95% in ICD-10-CM diagnostic and CPT-4 coding
  • Staying current with federal, state, regulatory, and hospital-specific coding guidelines
  • Participating in performance improvement and quality assurance activities
  • Attending educational sessions to maintain and enhance coding certifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Basic familiarity with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience using coding manuals and regulatory websites for research
  • Certification from AAPC or AHIMA such as CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, or specialty certification

Working conditions are sedentary/light effort with little risk; environment is generally pleasant.

This position is non-exempt, and applicants must reside in one of the specified states.

Salary range is approximately $26.48 to $50.49 per hour.

  • Certification required from AAPC or AHIMA: CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, or specialty certification
