Hospital Outpatient Coder Senior reviews, analyzes, and assigns codes for diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems. This position ensures provider/patient continuity, accurate data, and optimal reimbursement while complying with all coding guidelines, federal regulations, and accreditation standards.
Responsibilities include determining proper codes/modifiers, reviewing medical records, coding 100% of assigned encounters daily, managing time to meet deadlines, notifying management of issues, performing queries to clarify documentation, maintaining certifications, training new team members, and participating in special projects.
Required credentials and education:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Four years of healthcare outpatient coding experience
- Certifications: CCS, CPC, CPMA, COC, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, or other relevant certifications from AAPC or AHIMA
Additional skills:
- Experience coding hospital electronic medical records
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with automated coding systems (Cerner, OPTUM, 3M, Soarian)
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Zoom, Outlook)
- Knowledge of AHA coding clinic guidelines, CMS guidelines, AHIMA and AAPC code of ethics
Preferred experience:
- Oncology coding experience
- Ability to work independently
- Strong multitasking, communication, computer, customer service, and organizational skills

- Minimum of 4 years outpatient healthcare coding experience
- Proficiency with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS classification systems
