This role involves analyzing physician/provider documentation in Complex Outpatient and/or Inpatient health records to assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-CM, CPT, HCPCS, MS-DRG, POA, SOI, ROM, and APC assignments. You will use encoder software and coding guidelines set by CMS, AHA, AMA, AHIMA, and Revenue Excellence/RHM Organization to ensure coding accuracy.
Key responsibilities include navigating patient health records, applying coding guidelines, collaborating with HIM and Patient Financial Services for billing resolution, interpreting bundling/unbundling guidelines and payer policies, investigating claims denials or appeals, and maintaining coding quality standards. You must keep updated on coding and reimbursement regulations and adhere to ethical coding standards.
Minimum qualifications include completion of an AHIMA or AAPC-approved coding program or Associate’s degree in Health Information Management or related field (Bachelor’s preferred), certifications such as CCS, CPC, RHIT, or RHIA, and at least 2 years of current Complex Outpatient or Inpatient coding experience (3-5 years preferred). Experience with remote coding and encoding/grouping software is a plus. Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills are required, with the ability to work independently and in virtual environments. Physical requirements include computer work and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds. Some travel to Insight Hospital (10%) may be required.
