Penn Medicine is dedicated to providing the highest level of care to patients, conducting innovative research, and educating future medical leaders. This position is remote but limited to candidates residing in NJ, PA, or Delaware or willing to relocate there. The role is full-time, Monday through Friday, flexible start/end times, 40 hours per week.
The Clinical Coder Level I HIM Inpatient Specialist codes and abstracts information from inpatient and outpatient records with adherence to official coding guidelines to ensure appropriate reimbursement and compliance with regulations.
Key duties include:
- Assigning ICD-10-CM diagnostic and procedure codes with admission indicators;
- Determining MS-DRG groups based on diagnoses and procedures;
- Assigning ICD-10-CM diagnostic, CPT procedure codes, and modifiers to outpatient accounts;
- Applying drug administration and observation hour charges per guidelines;
- Reviewing coding modifiers per NCCI and OCE edits;
- Abstracting clinical and demographic data from records;
- Participating in data quality peer reviews;
- Assisting Patient Financial Services and physician offices with coding issues;
- Tracking productivity and assisting with inpatient case mix capture.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED;
- Certified Clinical Coder;
- Formal education in ICD-10-CM PCS, CPT-4 coding, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology;
- Certification as CCS, CCS-P (AHIMA), or CPC, COC (AAPC), or coding certification within three years of employment;
- Experience (including student experience) in ICD-10-CM PCS coding, MS-DRG assignment, and CPT-4 coding.
Preferred:
- Some experience with encoding software.
