Hospital Coder

Albany Medical Center

The Hospital Coder applies skills and knowledge of mandated inpatient coding and classification systems to select appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes (PCS) and other healthcare service codes. The coder ensures optimal reimbursement consistent with legal and ethical standards. This is a remote position.

Responsibilities include using computerized encoding systems to accurately sequence diagnoses and procedures per ICD-10-CM/PCS, UHDDS, Medicare, Medicaid, and other guidelines. Supports external healthcare data reporting for reimbursement, quality, and research. Queries providers for documentation clarification when records are ambiguous or incomplete. Demonstrates integrity and commitment to ethical coding. Participates in coding meetings, huddles, and LEAN problem-solving. Maintains focus during remote work and meeting participation.

Qualified candidates have a High School Diploma/GED, coding certification through AHIMA or AAPC in good standing, excellent computer skills, and knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, or CPT-4 coding classification. Experience with hospital coding and 3M 360 and EPIC systems is preferred. Position requires ability to work independently and protect confidential health information in a remote setting.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Coding certification/credential through AHIMA or AAPC, good standing required
  • Prior hospital medical coding experience preferred
  • Experience with 3M 360 and EPIC systems preferred
  • Must pass assessment with score of 80% or higher; new coders with higher assessment scores considered
  • Proficient computer skills; ability to navigate multiple systems and troubleshoot
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment protecting confidential health information
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, or CPT-4 coding classification
  • Detail-oriented and efficient while maintaining productivity
