Inpatient Coder

The Department of Health Information Management is seeking a full-time Inpatient Coder. Reporting to the Coding Manager and the Director of Health Information Management, responsibilities include:

  • Abstract clinical information from medical records and assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, or CPT codes according to established procedures.
  • Maintain optimal coding standards ensuring uniformity for compliance and reimbursement.
  • Select accurate and descriptive codes from the appropriate classification system.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient medical record data.
  • Analyze medical record information to ensure appropriate code usage.
  • Query physicians for appropriate documentation.
  • Collaborate with department and hospital staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • RHIA, RHIT, or CCS coding certification.
  • Over 1 year in a supervisory or administrator capacity.
  • Ability to make coding decisions using established guidelines.
  • Self-starter capable of working independently.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree with related Health Information Management experience.
  • 3-5 years direct coding experience in an acute care setting.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Salary Grade/Rank: SL-2

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • RHIA or RHIT or CCS coding certification
  • Minimum 1 year supervisory/administrator experience
  • Knowledgeable in coding guidelines and independent work
  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Information Management
  • Preferred: 3-5 years acute care coding experience
