At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to inpatient encounters based on documentation in the electronic medical record while ensuring compliance with rules and regulatory guidelines.
Qualifications include an Associate’s degree or higher in a CAHIIM accredited program or equivalent experience, plus one year of relevant inpatient coding experience or successful completion of Houston Methodist coding programs.
Candidates must hold one of the following certifications: RHIT, RHIA, or CCS (all AHIMA).
The role requires knowledge of coding classification systems, DRG and APC systems, official coding guidelines, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and proficiency with electronic medical records and coding software.
Essential functions include collaborating with the coding team, responding to coding requests, querying physicians for clarification, maintaining high coding quality and accuracy using ICD-10 codes, reviewing medical records and abstracting data into encoder and EHR systems, and adhering to ethical coding standards.
