Coder I - Pathology

The Coder I is responsible for abstraction and assigning valid CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS codes and modifiers to ensure appropriate reimbursement in accordance with federal, state, and private health plans as well as organizational and regulatory guidance. This role is typically responsible for less complex coding with oversight.

Essential functions include accurately abstracting information from service documentation, assigning and sequencing appropriate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes into billing systems ensuring compliance with guidelines; reviewing and resolving coding denials; timely completion of charge sessions; ensuring documentation meets various Teaching Physician Rules and payer-specific rules before code release; providing feedback on coding reviews; and trending deficiencies to management.

Additional responsibilities are meeting coding production and quality standards, participating in special projects, maintaining communication with office managers, departments, and providers, ensuring rule compliance, confidentiality under HIPAA, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED/equivalent (required)
  • 1 to 4 years of physician coding experience (preferred)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) accreditation by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) (required)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based (CCS-P), or Certified Coding Assistant (CCA) accreditation by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) (required)
