Inpatient Medical Coder II

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a major hospital and trauma center providing comprehensive health care services and community-based care in New England. The Inpatient Medical Coder II position is full-time and part of the Clinical Documentation department. The role involves assigning accurate medical codes (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT4/HCPCS) to diagnoses and procedures from patient records to ensure appropriate reimbursement. Responsibilities include reviewing medical records, sequencing diagnoses and procedures, assigning grouper codes (DRG, ASC, APG), entering data into computerized systems, assisting with auditing, maintaining coding accuracy of 95% or better, and training new staff. The coder adheres to AHIMA ethical coding standards, official coding guidelines, and hospital policies. Education typically requires an Associate's Degree in Health Information or Medical Records or equivalent experience. A minimum of 3 years inpatient coding experience in a Level 1 Trauma teaching facility is required. Preferred certifications include Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), RHIT, or RHIA from AHIMA. Knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems, human anatomy, physiology, pathology, health records management, and compliance with HIPAA is essential. The position supports the hospital's mission and protocols, including infection control and safety procedures.

Compensation estimates range from approximately $60,610 to $81,454 annually based on the stated hourly rate ($29.13 to $39.20) and standard full-time hours.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in Health Information, Medical Records, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3 years inpatient coding experience at a Level 1 Trauma, Teaching Facility
  • Preferred certification: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), RHIT or RHIA from AHIMA
  • In-depth knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT-4 coding conventions and DRG systems
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathology
  • Proficiency with medical records, computer systems, Microsoft applications, and data integrity practices
  • Ability to maintain a 95% coding accuracy rate
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to confidentiality and HIPAA compliance
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a healthcare team environment and adapt to workflow changes
