Responsibilities include extracting billable services from patient charts, applying CPT and ICD-10 codes, and entering these in the EPIC billing system for ocular operative procedures and consulting services. The role involves working closely with faculty, fellows, and residents to provide education on coding, proper documentation, reimbursement optimization, and regulatory compliance.
Key duties:
- Review ophthalmology provider progress and procedure reports via electronic medical records.
- Apply appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes with verification of adequate documentation.
- Enter charges ensuring clean claim submission and manage edits.
- Respond to billing group queries related to coding denials.
- Investigate coding issues using professional and payer guidelines.
- Research denials, report trends, and identify improvement opportunities.
- Compile documentation to support appeals for reimbursement.
- Perform administrative and clerical support for coding and billing.
- Provide coding and documentation education to billing providers.
- Review and feedback on coding documentation impacting reimbursement.
- Keep department leadership and faculty informed on coding and reimbursement changes.
- Attend continuing education and professional development events.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent plus three years of professional medical coding experience.
- Substitution of equivalent college coursework or vocational/technical training allowed.
- Certification required: CPC (to be obtained within 6 months of hire), or CCS-P, CCA, RHIA.
Preferred:
- Professional demeanor with strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS), insurance and billing policies.
- Ability to interpret and organize medical data.
- Familiarity with EPIC system.
- Experience in ophthalmology coding or billing preferred.
The position is full-time, based in Gainesville, Florida with no indication of remote work option.
