Inpatient Hospital Coder

This is a 100% remote position based in Wisconsin.

Work one-on-one during training with a Coding Education/Quality Specialist and receive ongoing support.

Flexible work schedule once trained with options to work four 10-hour days or four 9-hour days plus one 4-hour day.

Responsible for reviewing inpatient clinical documentation, procedural information, and diagnostic results to apply ICD-10-CM and PCS diagnostic and procedural codes used for billing, data reporting, research, regulatory compliance, and quality monitoring.

Uses professional coding training, critical thinking, and clinical knowledge to accurately assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes to conditions and procedures documented within inpatient electronic medical records.

Applies Official Coding Guidelines, CMS regulations/guidelines, and other coding standards.

Maintains quality and productivity standards set by the organization.

Remains current on ICD-10-CM and PCS coding principles, governmental regulations, official guidelines, and third-party payer requirements.

Strong knowledge of MS-DRGs and APR-DRGs.

Works collaboratively with providers and departments such as clinical documentation improvement and quality to standardize and enhance coding, documentation, and quality reporting practices.

Utilizes a variety of software solutions in daily work.

Demonstrates flexibility and strong commitment to a team environment, often working remotely.

Requirements:

  • Associate degree in Health Information Technology or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management and/or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required.
  • Previous hospital coding experience is highly desirable.
  • Prior computer and/or encoder software experience is desirable.
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or CCS required.
  • New graduates eligible for certification must complete certification exam at earliest testing dates following employment.
  • Failure to pass exam after multiple attempts may result in termination following evaluation.
