Clinical Coder

The Clinical Coder performs accurate and timely coding of patient records, serving as an educator, subject matter expert, and liaison for coding matters. Responsibilities include reviewing charge submissions for accuracy, adding modifiers, scrubbing claims, preparing for insurance submission, and closing clean batches. The role analyzes medical records for complete documentation, communicates with providers for clarifications, stays current on coding regulations and industry trends, educates healthcare staff on coding policies, investigates billing denials, and resolves patient billing and coding inquiries.

Candidates must have knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10, CPT codes, Evaluation & Management coding, and regulatory requirements. Proficiency with EHR software and Microsoft Office is required. Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently and in teams, and flexible availability are essential.

An Associate's Degree in Medical Coding or equivalent experience is required. Certified Procedure Coder (CPC) through AAPC is mandatory. Local AAPC involvement and 2+ years of primary care coding experience preferred. Certification as Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC) and medical coding audit experience are advantageous.

This role is based in a healthcare setting, involves frequent sitting and computer work, and occasional physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 10 pounds.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in Medical Coding or equivalent experience
  • Certified Procedure Coder (CPC) credential through AAPC
  • 2+ years coding experience in primary care preferred
  • Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC) and prior medical coding audit experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10, CPT codes, Evaluation & Management coding
  • Familiarity with coding regulations and standards
  • Skilled in using EHR software and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook)
  • Strong professional communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to work flexible hours
