Inpatient Coder

Houston Methodist

At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder position is responsible for assigning diagnostic and procedure codes accurately to inpatient encounters based on electronic medical record documentation, ensuring compliance with established rules and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or higher in a CAHIIM accredited program, or two additional years of relevant experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum one year of relevant inpatient coding experience or successful completion of Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice or Outpatient to Inpatient Coder Transition Programs.
  • Required certifications: RHIT, RHIA, or CCS from AHIMA.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in medical coding classification systems, DRG, APC systems, and official coding guidelines.
  • Knowledgeable in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and electronic medical records (preferably EPIC) and imaging systems.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with patients, physicians, and coding team.
  • Competency in electronic encoder applications and office software.

Responsibilities:

  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS codes using electronic encoder applications.
  • Review medical records for principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures.
  • Communicate with physicians via established query process to clarify diagnoses/procedures.
  • Maintain high standards of coding accuracy and comply with AHIMA ethical coding standards.
  • Meet departmental productivity and time standards.
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement and knowledge sharing within the coding team.

Additional Info:

  • Business professional attire; not required to wear scrubs or uniform.
  • May require travel within and outside Houston Metropolitan area.
  • Non-exempt FLSA status.
