The Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for reviewing medical records and encounter documentation to ensure accurate, complete, and compliant coding in accordance with ICD-10-CM and CPT guidelines. This role supports compliant billing practices, maximizes reimbursement, and ensures adherence to federal, state, and payer regulations, including those specific to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).
Responsibilities include reviewing and analyzing patient records for coding accuracy, assigning diagnosis and procedure codes, adhering to national coding standards, and collaborating with healthcare providers to clarify documentation and resolve coding issues. The specialist provides education to clinical staff, supports billing claims processing, maintains confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA, and participates in ongoing professional development.
Required skills include proficiency in medical terminology, coding systems (ICD-10-CM, CPT), knowledge of FQHC billing, effective communication, and collaboration skills. EPIC experience is preferred.
Education and experience requirements: Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or related field, professional coding certification (CPC, CCS, or equivalent), and 3-4 years of professional fee coding experience.
Physical requirements involve typical office duties as well as occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
