Medical Records Coder II - Inpatient

Patient Revenue Management Organization (PRMO) is a centralized revenue cycle organization supporting Duke Health. The Medical Records Coder II (Inpatient) is a certified coder responsible for coordinating and reviewing coding work, assisting with training programs, and accurately coding medical records using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT-4 coding conventions. The position involves reviewing complex medical records, ensuring quality and accuracy, coding diagnoses and procedures for optimal reimbursement, consulting with physicians and ancillary personnel, and maintaining understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and coding guidelines. This role is 100% remote with workers required to reside in NC, VA, SC, TN, FL, or TX.

Duties include:

  • Review and code complex inpatient medical records using appropriate coding conventions
  • Coordinate and review work of subordinate employees and conduct audits
  • Assist with research and continuing education on coding specialization areas
  • Ensure accurate DRG/APC assignment
  • Educate physicians and communicate with nursing and ancillary staff for documentation
  • Maintain knowledge of medical record practices, regulations, JCAHO, HCFA, and others
  • Assist with special projects and perform other related duties

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma required
  • Certification required: one of RHIA (no experience required), RHIT (no experience required), CCS (1 year coding experience), CPC or HCS-D (2 years coding experience)
  • Must hold current active certification in one of the above

  • Effective communication skills for physician and staff education
  • Knowledge of medical record standards and healthcare regulations
